Camp MAGIK and Camp Erin 2017 Spring Announcement

A special camp for kids ages-17 who have lost a parent, sibling, or other close loved one
April 21-23 Cartersville, Georgia ; Deadline to apply April 12, 2017
May 5-7 Hampton, Georgia ; Deadline to apply April 26,2017

Camp MAGIK is pleased to announce its 2017 spring schedule of healing camps for children and teens. Camp MAGIK (Mainly About Grief In Kids) serves children who have experienced death of a parent, sibling, or other close family member within the past three years. Camp MAGIK will provide an opportunity for children and teens to meet, talk, and process their grief with professional grief counselors. Time will also be spent on play and fun as a way to help the children heal from the experience of death in the family. Activities may include archery, canoeing, a ropes course, nature hikes, treasure hunts, hay rides, campfires, story-telling, and a talent show. Each camp will be divided into two groups, one for ages 7-11 and one for ages 12-17. There will be two camp sessions held this spring at dates as noted above. Please pick the one session best suited to you and note this on your application form in the space provided. Application forms are available at www.campmagik.org under the "join us" tab.

Camp MAGIK/Camp Erin sessions are FREE OF CHARGE for attending children. Our Cartersville camp is sponsored by the generous support from private and corporate donations. Camp Erin, our session in Hampton, is sponsored by The Moyer Foundation.

Applications need to be postmarked and sent to Camp MAGIK, 3377 Ridgewood Road, Atlanta, GA 30327 or faxed to the office at 404-355-6631 by the deadline dates. Due to high demand for this camp, we cannot accept repeat campers.

Parents and guardians - There are three (3) options
  • We are offering a special retreat for parents/guardians which will be held at the same time as the children's camp. The retreat will be facilitated by professional counselors and will provide an opportunity for adults to process their own grief and be with others who have also had a significant loss through death. Parents/Guardians will stay on the same campus, but separate from their children. Activities will include opportunities to relax, talk, provide, receive support, and learn more about grief and loss in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Registration fee for the adult retreat is $25.00 which includes room, meals, and all activities.
  • For parents/guardians with more limited time, a special workshop will be held on Sunday April 23 and Sunday May 7 from 9:00am to 2:30pm. This program will help you understand more about your child's grief and will suggest healthy ways for your whole family to manage and cope with your loss. Activities will include a classroom lecture, a cook-out, and small group discussion. This option is free of charge. All events except the cook-out are adults only.
  • Parents/Guardians who do not have the time to participate in either of the two options above can still have their children attend camp. Drop your children off at the designated drop-off time on Friday and pick up at the designated pick-up time on Sunday.

Camp Locations:
  • The YMCA High Harbour Camp is located in Cartersville, Georgia, approximately 40 minutes north of Atlanta. Free transportation to this camp is provided from Dalton, GA; Rome, GA; Atlanta, GA.
  • The Calvin Center is located in Hampton, Georgia, approximately 30 minutes south of downtown Atlanta. Free transportation provided from Atlanta, GA and north/northeast GA.

Specific Camp MAGIK/Camp Erin details (directions, what to bring, etc) will be mailed to all camp participants upon acceptance to camp. For questions, please call Rene Searles McClatchey at 404-790-0140 or email campmagik@gmail.com. We hope to see you at Camp MAGIK/Erin!

Stanford University Pre-Collegiate Studies Programs

Stanford's programs offer highly motivated, intellectually curious students the opportunity to investigate topics not typically taught in secondary schools. Students engage in small classes taught by instructors who are experts in their fields and passionate about teaching. In this setting, students hone their academic skills and form new friendships with intellectual peers. Students in our residential programs get a taste of college life on the beautiful Stanford campus. Past students have described their Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies experience as life changing.

Stanford Sports Business Academy
Our newest program, Stanford Sports Business Academy gives high school students an overview of careers in the sports and entertainment industries with a focus on management, law, negotiation, marketing, and leadership. Students will experience what it's like to work in the business of sports and entertainment and will meet leaders and athletes in professional sports.

Summer Humanities Institute
At the Summer Humanities Institute, rising high school juniors and seniors explore the big questions at the heart of the humanities in seminars led by distinguished Stanford Professors. Students spend the first two weeks intensively studying and researching a topic in history, philosophy, or literature, attending daily lectures by faculty members, and participating in group discussions. During their third week, students work closely with their professors, graduate students, and writing mentors to produce original research projects.

Summer Arts Institute
At Stanford Summer Arts Institute, high school students from around the world come together for a three-week intensive program offering academically engaging interdisciplinary courses in photography, product design, music, and architecture. The Summer Arts Institute's six courses emphasize the essential connections between the arts and other areas of study, including cognitive science, psychology, and engineering.

Artificial Intelligence Laboratory's Outreach Summer Program
AI will change the world. Who will change AI? The Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory's Outreach Summer program intends to increase diversity in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Current 9th grade girls are encouraged to apply. Students will learn about Artificial Intelligence through a combination of lectures, hands-on research projects, field trips, and mentoring activities during this two-week residential program.

High School Summer College
Students ages 16-19 choose from more than 145 college courses in 30 academic departments, earning Stanford undergraduate course credit and an official Stanford University transcript. Students in the residential, commuting, and online Summer College programs create their own course schedules and experience what life is like as undergraduate student at Stanford.

Summer Institutes
At the Summer Institutes, high school students engage in intensive, single-subject courses with instructors and peers who share their talents, passions, and interests. Coursework is tightly integrated with the social experience in academically themed residences. Courses in areas ranging from business to biotechnology and cryptography to creative writing are customized to give students deep exposure and hands-on experience. There are over 50 courses from which to choose.

Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC)
At SUMaC, an elite group of talented rising high school juniors and seniors from around the world come to Stanford for intensive study in advanced mathematics through lectures, guided research, and group problem solving. In a social environment centered on mathematics, students explore current lines of mathematical research and applications across scientific disciplines.

University-Level Online Math and Physics Courses
For students who have surpassed their high school's math and physics curriculum, University-Level Online Math and Physics courses are offered throughout the year and are largely self-paced, giving students the opportunity to take a broad array of math and physics courses. Expert instructors are available for optional office hours to meet with students online and offer assistance as they progress through the course material.
